#EP - 7" Vinyl# Jethro Tull // Ring out, solstice bells //
[Rhino; Quantity: 2000; Release type: RSD Exclusive Release]
Side A
1. Ring out, solstice bells (3.40); (Ian Anderson), produced by Ian Anderson; Remixed by Steven Wilson
2. A Christmas song (3.04); (Ian Anderson), produced by Terry Ellis & Jethro Tull
SIDE B
1. Another Christmas song (3.31); (Ian Anderson), produced by Ian Anderson
2. Magic bells (Ring out, solstice bells) (3.16); (Ian Anderson).
Produced, arranged and re-titled by Mike Batt, remixed by Steven Wilson
Note: The Jethro Tull outtake Magic Bells (Ring Out, Solstice Bells)'was produced by Mike Batt in 1976.
The song was recorded on 23 October 1976 and is basically an alternate arrangement of 'Ring Out, Solstice Bells',
with the biggest difference being the time signature (the original version has the verses in 7/4 whereas
the alternate version Mike Batt produced stays in 4/4 all the way through).
The story behind this recording is that after Jethro Tull had finished
the original version of the song, the executives at Chrysalis Records
were hesitant about whether it would be a successful single due
to the song's time signature so they brought Mike Batt in to produce
a more commercial sounding version that could be released as a single
(I should point out the original version was always going to be
included on the group's 'Songs from the Wood' album - the version
Mike Batt produced was just going to be for the single). Based on
what the band members have said, the recording session with Mike
Batt was quite uncomfortable as the band didn't really want to rerecord
the song in the new arrangement, but they decided to just go along
with it and record the song that way. Ian Anderson also says the
title change from 'Solstice Bells' to 'Magic Bells' was probably
Mike Batt's idea. Afterwards, both versions of the song were submitted
to the record company, who ultimately decided the original version
was the better choice for the single anyway so they ended up releasing
the original version as the single.
Forty years ago, on November
26, 1976, Jethro Tull released a four song EP. The new 40th anniversary
tracklisting on this EP includes two Steven Wilson remixes - „Solstice
Bells“, and a mix of the previously unreleased „Magic
Bells (Solstice Bells)“ which was produced by Mike Batt for
a possible Christmas single, but not used.
